Reading Support services supplement English Language Arts instruction provided in the grade-level classroom in order to accelerate a student's rate of reading growth. Instruction is provided to small groups of students with similar needs in a quiet learning environment. The focus of instruction is based on the needs of the students. Instruction in reading fluency and comprehension is provided through teacher modeling, shared practice, and teacher-supported independent practice. Reading fluency instruction and practice works to improve the student's accuracy, expression, and rate. Comprehension instruction and practice includes utilization of comprehension strategies, strategies for learning new vocabulary, and writing in response to reading. Students work through increasingly challenging fiction and nonfiction texts with growth assessed regularly through various methods.
