Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

       I would like to welcome you and your child to a year of learning and exploring another language!  My name is Lana Harter and I will be your Spanish teacher for the upcoming year.  Just to give you a little background about myself, I graduated from the University of Illinois – Champaign/Urbana with a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching of Spanish degree and a minor in teaching English as a Second Language.  I then went on to complete my Master’s of Arts in Spanish Education attending the Universidad de Guanajuato in Mexico.  I have had the privilege to study abroad in Spain, Mexico, and Costa Rica.  I'm always looking for more opportunities to travel!  My hope is to give my students the perfect mixture of cultural insights, communicative strategies, and linguistic based knowledge as they begin their careers in learning and using the Spanish language. 

      Because my class is an elective, I know that you had other options and am delighted that you have chosen Spanish as an interest.  The course focus can be separated into four categories: speaking, listening, writing, and reading.  Our united goal as a class will be to develop each of these skills and, within each unit, there will be opportunities to do so.  With our goal in mind, I will be teaching in the target language as much as possible, as well as expecting students to use Spanish on a daily basis. 

      Although the study of a world language requires a continuous and diligent effort, it can be a very rewarding experience.  I truly hope this year of Spanish will be beneficial to all involved.  All of the relevant news for the classroom, including reminders about assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, etc… can be found through Google Classroom.  If you would like an invitation to receive parent/guardian updates for your child via Google Classoorm, simply email me with the address found below.  If you have a question regarding your child’s progress throughout the year, please feel free to contact me through email or phone using the information below.  I am very eager to begin the year and look forward to spending time with you!
