  • What is Avery Parents for Racial Equity?
In 2017, a group of parents gathered in a living room and decided to start a group to advocate for children and families of color, and explore how we can make our school community more supportive and inclusive.

We usually meet once a month in the Avery library. Some of us do book studies together - diving into issues involving race and education. We are PTO-affiliated and collaborate with racial equity parent groups at all elementary schools in the Webster Groves School District.

    Our mission:
We strive to build awareness, solutions, and leadership for racial justice -- the systemic fair treatment of people of all races. We will generate transformative ideas, information and experiences/resources to produce equitable opportunities and better futures for all children and families at Avery and beyond.

    Our vision:
We hope to be a school and community where all children are supported in their journey toward personal and academic success; where all families feel welcome in all aspects of school and community; where teachers and staff receive training, encouragement and support to overcome generations of systemic racism in education; and where race no longer is a statistical predictor of educational success or social involvement.
