Mrs. Dana Mitchell


I have been a physical education teacher since 1995 and have been at Hixson since 2000. I graduated from UMSL with a Bachelors Degree in Education specializing in physical education and health. I chose PE and health because I am passionate about health and fitness information.  I love to share it!  My mom noticed this passion and helped guide me toward teaching.  I am certified kindergarten through twelfth grade. Most of my time I have spent working with middle school students, which I love! I earned my Masters Degree in Educational Administration through Lindenwood University in 2007.  I feel my masters helped to have a better understanding of the school system and how I can best help students learn.  I  continue to take courses to improve my teaching and understanding of students. I have completed my  Masters + 50 but plan to be a lifelong learner.


I am married to my college sweetheart. We have two children, both boys. Both of my boys graduated from Rockwood Summit High school. Both are very athletic and currently involved in Krav Maga.   During high school they were both swimming and water polo players. My younger son was also a wrestler. My older son has just become a police officer. We also have a dog. We got our black lab, Odie when he was 10 weeks old.  He is full of energy and has a really great personality.  He makes me laugh a lot! Currently he takes up most of my free time!  He wants to be with mom all the time.  My current focus is training Odie and I would like to one day have him trained enough to be a therapy dog.  I would like to be able to bring him to school with me! 

You may see me exercising with the kids in class.  I try to lead by example.  It is important to have variety in your workout so I like to mix it up!  To stay in shape I like to do a variety of activities which include biking, kickboxing, cardio machines, yoga, weight lifting, swimming, yard work, and of course walking Odie the dog!  Also working out with friends or family can be great motivators!  I have several different friends that I meet to work out with regularly.   I think having a workout buddy is really important!  It keeps you committed and it's fun to get to see and talk with your friends! Nutrition is also a very important part of your overall health. 

My focus this summer has been eating for nutrition.  There are so many delicious ways to eat healthy!  Other foods flavors really come through when you don't fill up on overly processed and artificial foods. You also can eat alot more food for the same amount of calories! My Fitness Pal is a fun app that I have been using to learn the most about the foods I want to eat.
