Second grade students participate in classroom screening lessons taught by gifted specialists for the purpose of exposing all students to activities that promote creative, analytical, and critical thinking. These enrichment lessons will take place in the regular classroom during students' regular second grade program. All second grade students are also given the CogAT. The CogAT is a nationally-normed test that provides a description of the student's own cognitive resources for learning by measuring verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning abilities. This test will be given to all second grade students as part of their regular second grade program. The second grade screening takes place during October of second grade. Services for qualifying students begin in January/February of the current school year.
