Redistricting Process to Begin
Cooperative Strategies, a consulting company, will lead a redistricting process for elementary school boundaries here beginning this year. The Board of Education chose the company following a request for qualifications and interview process. The district will create new elementary boundaries to include the new Henry Givens School, a new neighborhood school that will include the entire Steger/Givens campus. Sixth graders will move to Hixson Middle School. Cooperative Strategies had assisted the district last year in determining how to best address space needs because of growing elementary enrollment numbers.
Cooperative Strategies' work includes creating and refining multiple scenarios/maps to provide additional space in all elementary buildings and accommodate the additional neighborhood school, Dr. Henry Givens Elementary, which will occupy all of what is now the campus of Steger Sixth Grade Center and its lower level. District residents will have the opportunity to participate in the redistricting process when it gets under way.
Priorities for the newly formed attendance zones are distance and safety, enrollment balance and diversity. Cooperative Strategies’ work will be used in developing an elementary redistricting recommendation to the Board of Education by late spring of 2020.
Voters in April approved a $22 million bond issue (Proposition E) to address crowding in district elementary schools as well as safety, accessibility and other space issues.
