This is a yearlong course which covers the curriculum that is contained in semester one of our Algebra course. Topics covered include solving formulas, graphing functions, linear functions, and systems of linear equations.
5524 ALGEBRA 1PART II

This is a yearlong course which covers the curriculum that is contained in semester two of our Algebra course. Topics covered include solving inequalities (one and two variables), quadratic functions with emphasis on factoring, and exponential functions.

This is the beginning course in a sequence of college preparatory courses. Topics covered include solving formulas, graphing functions, analysis of linear functions, analysis of quadratic functions, analysis of basic exponential functions, solving inequalities, solving systems of equations, and sequences.
5600 ALGEBRA IN MANUFACTURING PROCESS, ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND DESIGN (AMPED)
Credit: 2 units (1 credit in Math; 1 credit in Practical Arts)

This is a 2hour block class that will earn an Algebra and Practical Art credit. AMPED students will operate a business running an advanced fabrication lab customizing textile products and manufacturing other items composed of wood, metal, and/or plastic. The proceeds generated from the business aspect of the program will be utilized to selffund the venture and provide philanthropic opportunities for students through community service or monetary gifts to local charities. Students learn skill sets in various engineering techniques including sublimation, CNC operations, and rapid prototyping. Additional areas for student engagement include composite technologies, alternative energies, and automation robotics.

This is the second course in a sequence of courses to prepare a student for college admission eligibility. In this course students will have informal handson experiences which will deepen their understanding of the properties of shapes in two and three dimensions, and the application of those properties to realworld situations. In addition, they will use formal deductive reasoning to generalize and prove their discoveries. Topics covered include properties of a triangle, congruent triangles, properties of parallel lines, polygons, and introduction to logic and formal deductive proof. Similarity, properties of right triangles, polygons and circles, perimeter, area, and volume will also be studied.

Recommendation: Students who have earned an “A” in both semesters of Algebra (in 8th or 9th grade) experience an appropriate yet challenging placement in this course.

This is the second course in a sequence of courses to prepare a student for college admission eligibility and leading toward Advanced Placement Calculus. In this course a student acquires knowledge of geometric objects in two and three dimensions and an opportunity to apply this knowledge to discovering relations among geometric objects. There will be heavy emphasis on mathematical proofs as well as an introduction to other geometric topics such as transformational geometry. Note: This counts as a weighted grade.

Recommendation: Students who have earned a “C” or above in Algebra and Geometry experience an appropriate yet challenging placement in this course.
This is the third course in a sequence of courses to prepare a student for college admission eligibility. It is also the first course in the sequence which requires average or above proficiency in the previous two courses. The student strengthens and extends the algebraic skills begun in the Algebra 1 course and continues a study of more advanced algebraic skills and applications. This course includes the topic of trigonometry.

Recommendation: Students who have earned a grade of “B” or better in both semesters of Honors Geometry or an “A” in both semesters of regular Geometry and Algebra 1 experience an appropriate yet challenging placement in this course.
This is the third course in a sequence of courses to prepare a student for college admission eligibility and leading toward Advanced Placement Calculus. The student strengthens and extends the algebraic skills begun in Algebra 1 and develops more advanced algebraic skills and applications. Also, trigonometry will be studied. This course is designed for students who earn credit for two semesters of Algebra 2 or Algebra 2Trigonometry. Placement is based on a teacher recommendation. It is designed to prepare students to take Precalculus at Webster Groves High School or to take College Algebra in a postsecondary setting. Topics include linear functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, polynomial functions, rational functions, and systems of equations.

This is the fourth course in a sequence of courses to prepare a student for college admission eligibility and enrollment in a calculus course. The student will continue to strengthen and extend the algebraic skills developed in previous courses. In addition, students will extend their knowledge of trigonometry. This course is the fourth in a sequence of courses preparing for college admission eligibility and leading toward AP Calculus. Through an intensive study of functions and their graphs, many of the important concepts of calculus are foreshadowed. Students will extend their knowledge of trigonometry and the algebraic concepts needed for the study of calculus. Real world applications of mathematics are emphasized and a graphing calculator is used daily. Note: This course will count as a weighted grade.

This is a college level algebra course with dual credit offered through University of Missouri – St. Louis. It is designed for students who will need College Algebra credit in a postsecondary setting. The course includes linear, quadratic, and rational equations and inequalities, the algebra of functions (including polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions), the graphs of some of these functions, and systems of equations.
5830 INTRODUCTION TO CALCULUS & DISCRETE MATHEMATICS

Prerequisite: 1 full credit of PreCalculus

This course extends the topics covered in PreCalculus. In addition to more fully developing precalculus concepts, students will study topics in discrete mathematics including logic, combinations, recursion, and circuits. Beginning concepts in calculus will also be addressed.

The content of this course is recommended in a College Entrance Examination Board publication, Advanced Placement Mathematics. Successful completion of this course prepares a student to pass the Calculus AP College Entrance Examination Board Advanced Placement Mathematics examination. The student has the option of concurrent enrollment at the University of MissouriSt. Louis (a fee must be paid to UMSL) whereby that student will receive five calculus credits from UMSL. The student is expected to assume considerable responsibility in deciding what he/she must do outside of class to master the ideas dealt with in the course. The textbook used in the course is a book which achieves a balance in emphasis upon the calculus ideas themselves and the application of these ideas. Note: This course will count as a weighted grade, and college credit may be earned from UMSL.
5531 AP STATISTICS

The full year AP Statistics course is equivalent to a onesemester, introductory, noncalculusbased college course in statistics. Students have the potential to earn college credit by taking the AP exam in May. The course introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. There are four themes in the AP Statistics course: exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference. Students use technology, investigations, and problem solving as they build conceptual understanding. Note: This course counts as a weighted grade.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS—MATH
9420 MATH DEPARTMENT STUDENT INTERN
Credit: ½ elective unit

*Requires the permission of the teacher to which student will be assigned and the permission of the department chair.
Students will be assigned to one math teacher but will work closely with the entire Mathematics Department. Each student will assist teachers in creating and teaching lessons, working with small groups of students, and tutoring individual students. The ideal candidate enjoys explaining mathematics and is interested in pursuing a career as a Mathematics teacher. This is not a math credit.
