Since its inception in 1998, the Statesmen Sports Hall of Fame has recognized and honored teams and individuals who have distinguished themselves while playing, coaching, or contributing to athletics at Webster Groves High School, the former Douglass High School, or in their collegiate or professional careers.
The next class of inductees to the Webster Groves High School Statesmen Sports Hall of Fame has been selected and are listed below. They will be honored at a banquet to be held Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Westborough Country Club in Webster Groves. Tickets for the event can be purchased online here: Hall of Fame Tickets
Tim Cashel served as the Webster Groves High School head boys soccer coach for 17 seasons, from 2002–2018, compiling an impressive record of 241-157-26. During his tenure, Cashel led the Statesmen to back-to-back State Championships in 2014 and 2015. In his final season, he guided the team to another outstanding finish as the 2018 state runner-up.
Christy Jayne Curtis, Class of 1998, was a standout swimmer in high school and continued her swimming career at Trinity University in San Antonio, becoming one of the most accomplished swimmers in the program and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) history. From 1999–2002, Curtis earned All-Conference honors in three events every year and won seven individual conference championships, including four consecutive titles in the 400 individual medley. She was a three-time NCAA Division III All-American and one of only two multi-year All-Americans in Trinity swimming history, as well as the only one during the SCAC era.
Tomas Gomez, Class of 2011, was a goalie for the boys soccer team. He continued his soccer career at Georgetown University, where he played from 2011–2014 and established himself as one of the program’s top goalkeepers. He still holds Georgetown records for most shutouts in both a single season and a career. Gomez earned Second Team All-Region honors twice during his collegiate career before beginning his professional career in Major League Soccer in 2015. Since then, Gomez has enjoyed a long professional career in MLS, competing at the highest level of American soccer for more than a decade.
Jenna Harris, Class of 2006, was an accomplished swimmer who won two individual state championships and set four school records. She was also a four-time High School All-American in 2005. Harris continued her career at the University of Virginia, where she won three ACC championships and earned four All-American honors as a member of the 800 freestyle relay from 2007–2010. She was also named to the ACC All-Academic Team twice. Harris is one of two individual girls state swimming champions in Webster Groves High School history.
Brad Jordan, Class of 1994, was a top soccer player in high school and continued his career at Missouri State University, where he earned two NSCAA All-Region honors and was a three-time Missouri Valley Conference All-League selection. He was also named to the MVC All-Tournament Team twice. Jordan led the Bears in goals scored and points in two seasons in each category. He finished his Missouri State career ranked second all-time in points (97), goals (34), assists (29), shots (198), and game-winning goals (12).In 1997, Jordan helped lead Missouri State to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. In recognition of his outstanding collegiate career, Jordan was inducted into the Missouri State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.
Matt McAvin, Class of 1991, graduated as the school’s all-time leader in goals, scoring 28 goals in a single season and 75 goals over his career. He continued his soccer career at Saint Louis University, where he recorded seven goals and 11 assists over two seasons in 1993 and 1994. McAvin went on to play professionally for the St. Louis Ambush. Over four seasons from 1995–1998, he appeared in 96 games, scoring 29 goals and recording 20 assists. In 21 postseason games, he added six goals and four assists.
Ted Powers, Class of 1980, was a member of the Busch Soccer Club’s North American U-16 Championship soccer team. After high school, Powers continued his soccer career at Benedictine University and Rockhurst University, where he was named an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention in 1983. Following college, Powers played professional soccer for the Kalamazoo and Toledo Pride before beginning a coaching career at Fontbonne University. He later returned to professional soccer for one final season with the St. Louis Ambush during the 1993–1994 season. In 2020, Powers was inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame, recognizing his lasting contributions and accomplishments in the sport.
Jillienne Schilling, Class of 2008, was an elite swimmer who won an individual state championship and set three school records. She was a seven-time High School All-American from 2005–2008. Schilling continued her career at the University of Arkansas from 2008–2012. In 2011, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200-meter backstroke and 400-meter individual medley. Schilling is one of two individual girls state swimming champions in Webster Groves High School history.
Tim Velten, Class of 2002, was a standout multi-sport athlete in high school. He earned First Team All-Conference honors in soccer all four seasons, was named Suburban South Player of the Year as a senior. Velten continued his soccer career at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. As a sophomore, he earned First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Region and Third Team All-American honors. He later played at the University of Louisville, where he was named Co-MVP and Defensive MVP in 2004. Velten went on to play professional soccer, beginning with the Harrisburg City Islanders and later the Charleston Battery. Velten also contributed to the sport as a coach and has continued to make an impact on soccer coaching Webster Groves High School to a State Championship in 2022.
