    School History
Located on the lower level of Steger Sixth Grade Center, Dr. Henry Givens Jr. School enrolls children from throughout the district, chosen by lottery. Established in 1983 as the Webster Groves Elementary Computer School, it is unusually small compared to other elementary schools in the district. With only one classroom per grade, the school has a very strong community and family-based feel.

Dr. Henry Givens Jr. had been a teacher and Principal at Douglass School before he went on to become an assistant commissioner for the state’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and more recently, president of Harris-Stowe State University. Under his leadership at Douglass, the school became a “demonstration school” offering innovative programs such as multiage classrooms, foreign language instruction, advanced science for older children, team teaching and independent study.
