October Home/School Connection Questions
Why is family important to you? What do you value most about your family? What is hard about your family for you? What do you do when you are being a “good family member”?

How Can I Support ERS Students?
As you can imagine, teachers are always looking for new ways to support student learning. Donors Choose is one of the new ways we are purchasing materials for the classrooms that extend beyond the school budget or mini-grants. The mission of Donors Choose is to “make it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need, moving us closer to a nation where students in every community have the tools and experiences they need for a great education.” Here is how it works:

You find a project:
Find a classroom project that inspires you and give as little as $1. We're a public charity, so your donation is tax-deductible.
Donors Choose fulfills the order:
When a project is fully funded, we purchase all the requested items and ship them directly to the school.
Teachers thank you:
Every donor gets a thank-you letter from the teacher, photos from the classroom, and a report of how each dollar was spent.
Edgar Road staff currently have the following projects to support if you “choose”:
Tiffany Tebbe (Kindergarten Teacher): Learning with Osmo & Tiffly
Thank you for your support!

From The Secretary
A Note From the Music Room:
Hello everyone! I wanted to let you all know about a few positive things happening in the music room at Edgar Road this year. Each class has the opportunity to earn "Positive Paws" during their music time by demonstrating PRIDE expectations as a team. When classes work together, everyone can learn best! After a class earns 20 paw prints, they earn a music reward that they will have a hand in developing. Students are excited and already working hard to fill their charts. I also have a class twitter account you can follow to see pictures and tweets of the creative projects we are doing in our space! Feel free to follow along! (@MrsKissickMusic) 5th grade students received a letter regarding the opportunity to help perform the National Anthem at the Run for Webster on October 20th. Please let me know if your child would like to help us sing with the other elementary schools for the Webster Foundation!

Original Works is coming soon! Your child will be creating their own unique artwork for this project. You will then have the opportunity to order a variety of products featuring your child’s artwork! Order information will be coming home soon!

Read, Right & Run Marathon
Every year, Edgar Road students have the opportunity to participate in Go! St. Louis' Read, Right and Run Marathon. Students work through the year to read 26 books, do 26 good deeds and run 26 miles. We celebrate our accomplishment with a area-wide race in Forest Park on Saturday, April 6. Please see the attached letter for directions on how to register your child for this fun and challenging program! The deadline is Oct. 31. Contact Ms. Schrappen with any questions.

From the Counselor
Kindergarten, First and Second grade are continuing their work on coping strategies by practicing more tools they can put in their toolboxes! Kindergarten students are reading a story about Betti Spaghetti who uses Spaghetti Body. Spaghetti Body is a fun way of saying the special technique Progressive Muscle Relaxation. When we do spaghetti body, we tense up groups of muscles for the count of three, then let them wiggle like spaghetti. Try it at home by saying:

Squeeze your arms for 1, 2, 3 and wiggle them like spaghetti.

Squeeze your hands for 1, 2, 3 and wiggle them like spaghetti.

Squeeze your legs for 1, 2, 3 and wiggle them like spaghetti.

Squeeze your toes for 1, 2, 3 and wiggle them like spaghetti.

Finally, squeeze your eyes and mouth up tight for 1, 2, 3 and wiggle your head like spaghetti.

This is a fun way to ease tension in your body, as well as distract from a bad moment :) First graders are reading the book Peaceful Piggy Meditation. We talk about how we can take a moment when we feel upset and focus on our breathing. Students have been encouraged to try this at bedtime to see if it helps them fall asleep! Second graders are continuing talking about coping strategies with heroes vs. heroes in training. They will be going through scenarios to decide if a character’s strategy in the midst of a hard moment was appropriate or inappropriate. Keep talking to your children about strategies they can put in their mental toolboxes when they have hard days or big feelings:

What tools can you use when you have big feelings at recess?

What tools can you use when playing with your friends?

How can you say that you need to use your toolbox?

Thanks so much for working with your children and supporting Edgar Road!

The classroom that collects the most money will win a celebration provided by the PTO.
