Welcome to The Paw Print! Here is what’s happening at Edgar Road:

Cold Weather/Recess Procedures
In order to ensure the safety of our students during these cold temperatures we follow the guidelines provided by St. Louis Children’s Hospital. They are as follows (this includes the wind chill):
32 degrees and above - children can be outside for unlimited amount of time
20 - 32 degrees - children can stay outside for 10-15 minutes
10-20 degrees - children can stay outside for 5 minutes
10 degrees or below - children will not go outside for recess

Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for cold weather (ie: hats, gloves, coats, etc.) and make sure these items are labeled with your child’s name. If you need assistance obtaining cold weather items for your child please contact Sara Luesse, school counselor at 314-918-4503 or contact the school office.

November Home/School Connection Questions
Why are traditions important for families?
What are some traditions that we do as a family?
Of those traditions, what are your favorites?
How do you feel after some of our traditions (insert specific traditions)?
What are some traditions that you have heard your friends talk about?
How are your friend’s traditions different or similar than ours?
What traditions would you want to add to our family? Why?

From The Secretary

A Note from the Music Room
If you happen to have the board game "Candy Land" that is no longer being used by your family and would like to donate it to the Edgar Road Music room, we will gladly take it off of your hands! This classic children's game can easily be turned into a fun and exciting way for older students to learn how to read the music staff. Thank you!

WG Gifted & Talented Nomination Deadline Reminder
We are fast approaching the deadline for nominations for the WG Gifted and Talented program (grades 1-12) and the Gifted Fine Arts program (grades 2-8) to be submitted. To be considered this school year, nomination forms must be submitted on or before December 17, 2018. This deadline will be honored so that the evaluation process can be completed in a timely manner.

Students may be nominated for the Webster Groves Gifted and Talented Program any time during the year. Nomination forms are available at each school building from the gifted specialist. Nomination forms can also be downloaded from the Webster Groves Gifted & Talented curriculum webpage.
We are now able to resume first grade NNAT3 screening and anticipate completing screening no later than Nov. 30. We encourage first grade parents to nominate after the NNAT3 screening has been completed. Students that meet the screening criteria will be notified no later than Dec. 10. Those students that do not meet the screening criteria may still be nominated.
The Gifted Fine Arts program (grades 3-8) evaluates students in the spring of each school year. Students will be screened this school year, with programming to begin in the fall of next school year. For example, students in grade 2 may be screened this year, with programming to begin in their 3rd grade year. The student interview portion of the evaluation process will take place during the school day on Feb. 28, 2019 and March 1, 2019 at the Webster Groves Service Center. Transportation will be provided. There will be interview sessions, in the morning and in the afternoon each day. We are unable to accept nominations for this program after the Dec. 17th deadline.
If you have more questions about the nomination process, please contact Kristy Jackson, Gifted Education Coordinator or the gifted specialist in your building.

Kindergarten and First graders will review our discussions about Bucket Fillers this week, as well as start some new center work. In our centers, we will review and practice calming down strategies. Some of these strategies include: breathing, mindful thinking and stretching. It is important to have strategies we can use when we are in the yellow, red or blue zones! Keep talking with your child about which strategies they feel most comfortable with.

Second grade is continuing to talk about matching their reactions to the size of the problem. In their next lessons, they will talk about how to give a kind response to friends and family, even when they are upset or frustrated.
Third and Fourth grade students will meet with me next week to list some ways to show kindness and empathy to others at school. We will continue this discussion until Winter Break.

The ERS PTO ENRICHMENT PROGRAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS to enhance learning for Edgar Road students. Hour-long, volunteer-taught classes will take place before and after school, in the winter months. We'd like to offer a variety of topics based on YOUR special talents & hobbies. No teaching experience is necessary, but volunteers do have to submit to a free background check and participate in a brief safety meeting.
Enrichment runs from January 14th – March 8th. You, the instructor, determine the topic, size of group, age range, number of meetings, and provide supplies that you will be reimbursed for through the small fee students pay to attend the class. Other community members and parents can volunteer as assistants. Some ideas for classes that have been requested by students: drama, building with legos, coding, writing, chess, Spanish, cooking, baking, soccer, gymnastics, slime making, sewing, drawing, arts and crafts, sports, pottery, book club, robotics, and many more! Share your hobby/skill/interest with the students!

If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please contact Jackie Charlot at jackiecharlot@gmail.com. Deadline to sign up to teach a class is December 14th. Please fill out this form to help make a difference in our school: Enrichment Volunteer Sign-up Form! There is a letter about Enrichment enclosed in the attachments.
