Welcome to The Paw Print! Here is what’s happening at Edgar Road:
January Home/School Connection Questions
At this time of year, we usually talk about resolutions or refresh our goals from the start of the school year. As a family, this might be a good time to ask these questions:
What goals or resolutions have you thought about for this year?
What goals could we set as a family to work toward together?
Sometimes, people pick one word that encompasses their resolution. For example, if I want to declutter and make things a little easier around my house, I might pick the word “simplify”. What word could you pick that would remind you of your goals when you see it?

Welcome to the Six Flags® Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club! Your child’s school is participating in an exciting program that encourages students in grades K through 6 to read for fun. Read to Succeed is a free program sponsored by Six Flags Theme Parks. Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before the school’s deadline listed on the bottom of this page is eligible for a free admission ticket, valid at the St. Louis Six Flags Theme Park. The deadline is Friday, February 15, 2019.
Winter Webster Reads
Talking and writing about books at home and during school breaks is highly beneficial to maintain and even improve reading skills.
To earn a FREE book, please read the number of books listed for your grade level. Turn the completed for into the library by Friday, January 18th!
A few months ago the First Graders held a fundraiser for Hurricane victims. We received an update from McColl Elementary where the money was sent. They purchased 35 meal boxes that were delivered to families in need. This made a huge difference for many families! Thank you to the Edgar Road Community and the First Grade team for your efforts!

Happy New Year, Edgar Road Families! I hope you all had some time with your families and friends over the break and were able to relax a little.
This week, I will be meeting with third and fourth grade students to finish our units on Supportive Communities and Empathy. Third grade students will review their different ways to create a supportive community, as well as start defining Empathy. Fourth grade student will work on an activity called “Stand in My Shoes”. This activity will start with the book of the same name by Bob Sornson and will culminate with fourth graders reading several different scenarios and talking in small groups about the scenario. In each scenario they will be asked, “Put Yourself in My Shoes. How do I feel?” and “What could you do to show that you care?”. These would be excellent questions to ask as a family, especially when siblings might be having challenges.
After each grade level finishes their units on Empathy and Supportive Communities, we will extend our thinking to “What is Rude, Mean and Bullying?”. Each grade level will be working on this in January and the beginning of February. Students will learn the definitions of each word as well as strategies that are appropriate to solve each situation. As we talk about these topics, I will be adding handouts to the Paw Print. Be looking next week for these topics and definitions!
