Welcome to The Paw Print! Here is what’s happening at Edgar Road:
January Home/School Connection Questions
At this time of year, we usually talk about resolutions or refresh our goals from the start of the school year. As a family, this might be a good time to ask these questions:
What goals or resolutions have you thought about for this year?
What goals could we set as a family to work toward together?
Sometimes, people pick one word that encompasses their resolution. For example, if I want to declutter and make things a little easier around my house, I might pick the word “simplify”. What word could you pick that would remind you of your goals when you see it?

Welcome to the Six Flags® Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club! Your child’s school is participating in an exciting program that encourages students in grades K through 6 to read for fun. Read to Succeed is a free program sponsored by Six Flags Theme Parks. Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before the school’s deadline listed on the bottom of this page is eligible for a free admission ticket, valid at the St. Louis Six Flags Theme Park. The deadline is Friday, February 15, 2019.
We love when families and siblings come up to enjoy lunch and recess with their child. Please make sure to supervise any siblings, especially during recess time, as the aides will be supervising all grade level students.
Winter Webster Reads
Talking and writing about books at home and during school breaks is highly beneficial to maintain and even improve reading skills. To earn a FREE book, please read the number of books listed for your grade level. Turn the completed for into the library by THIS Friday, January 18th!
Kids Heart Challenge for the American Heart Association
Edgar Road is again participating in the American Heart Association fundraiser, the Kids Heart Challenge! (You may know it by its old name, Jump Rope for Heart). This is an opportunity for us to help others while we take care of our own hearts by learning about healthy choices and doing jump rope activities. Your child is bringing home an envelope this week, which contains information on how to participate. You can register online at http://www2.heart.org/goto/edgarroad. Donations can be made online (this is the simplest option) with checks (made to American Heart Association) or with cash. All donations are due by Feb. 14. Thank you for your support!
Six Flags read to succeed information
From the Counselor
January 16, 2019
This week, I will be introducing the topic of “Is it Rude, Mean or Bullying” to our Kindergarten, First and Second grade students. The definitions are as follows:
“When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s rude.”
“When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s mean.”
“When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they keep doing it even when you tell them to stop or show them that you’re upset, that’s Bullying.”
While we go through these definitions, we also do examples and non-examples and make sure we are understanding the words intentional, unintentional and hurtful.
For example, someone singing an annoying song and not stopping, isn’t really bullying, because it’s not hurting you physically or emotionally. Someone hitting you repeatedly and not stopping when you ask them to stop could be considered bullying, because they are hurting you physically. Two people having an argument is not considered bullying, because they are sharing in the action. Bullying is really a one sided, imbalance of power.
As we go further in to our discussions and examples, we will be talking about what we should do if someone is Rude, Mean or Bullying.
Next week, we will be starting the same conversation with third and fourth graders in their classroom lessons. Fifth grade will continue their Team 5 jobs and service.
ERS Trivia Night
March 2, 2019
The Trivia Night is our biggest fundraiser of the year. It is put on by the PTO and is always lots of fun! Keep your eyes and ears open for ways to help support this fun event and mark your calendars for 3/2/19!!
There will be a BoxTop collection this month. Please turn in the stash your family has been accumulating over winter break. The winning classroom earns a "special" prize at the end of the year. Currently Mrs. Lawson is in the #1 position.
Enrichment classes began this week. Please make sure they end promptly at 4:00 PM. Your child will meet you outside for pick-up.

Do you love WGSD AND enjoy social media? To continue our growth, the WGSD Foundation is seeking a volunteer Communication Specialist. Time commitment would be only 1-2 hours a week.
The WGSD Foundation’s mission is to drive innovative and dynamic learning opportunities that impact student success. We fund teacher-designed grants that specifically focus on novel, “new to WGSD” educational ideas anticipated to have powerful impact on students. We have much to share with the WG community, including highlighting the teachers and grant ideas funded, the impact of our work on kids AND the promotion of our events and fundraisers.
The Foundation is excited to work with someone who enjoys the world of social media and wants to get more involved supporting our schools. This person would ideally be someone who enjoys using Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and any other social media platforms. Time commitment is approximately 1-2 hours per week.
IF THIS IS YOU, please email Becky Hauser at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Or, PLEASE SHARE this information with your friends who love to post creative updates on social media (and who love to celebrate great things happening in the WGSD!)
