Welcome to The Paw Print! Here is what’s happening at Edgar Road:

Dear Parents,

This week we are offering special lunch items that go with food from the book (Special thanks to Chartwells for working with us on this). Today the cafeteria offered rice and beans and baked plantains from Peru. Tomorrow will be ravioli with sage and cheese. Ask your child if they made these choices and spark a conversation at home!

As part of our One Book, One School project, we are talking about communities. To support one of our lessons, please take a picture with your family in one of your favorite community places and email it to your classroom teacher. These pictures will be displayed at school as we learn about our communities and the places that are important to us. Please send in your photos by Monday, February 11th.

Sincerely,
Dr. Wuch

CALLING ALL 2019-2020 KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS
If you, or anyone you know has an incoming kindergarten child, please share that Kindergarten registration begins February 12th at Edgar Road. Please call the office to schedule your appointment. Registration after the 12th will be at Central Office.

Kids Heart Challenge for the American Heart Association
Edgar Road is again participating in the American Heart Association fundraiser, the Kids Heart Challenge! (You may know it by its old name, Jump Rope for Heart). This is an opportunity for us to help others while we take care of our own hearts by learning about healthy choices and doing jump rope activities. Your child was given an envelope from Ms. Schrappen or Mr. Jordan, which contains information on how to participate. You can register online at http://www2.heart.org/goto/edgarroad. Donations can be made online (this is the simplest option) with checks (made to American Heart Association) or with cash. All donations are due by Feb. 14. Thank you for your support!

Welcome to the Six Flags® Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club! Your child’s school is participating in an exciting program that encourages students in grades K through 6 to read for fun. Read to Succeed is a free program sponsored by Six Flags Theme Parks. Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before the school’s deadline listed on the bottom of this page is eligible for a free admission ticket, valid at the St. Louis Six Flags Theme Park. The deadline is Friday, February 15, 2019.

From the Counselor
February 6, 2019
Every grade level in our school has had their first lesson introducing “Is it Rude, Mean or Bullying?” Our grade level counseling goals will vary depending on the age of the students. Kindergarten students will review the concepts of rude, mean and bullying and also talk about actions that create a supportive community. We will also read “The Crayon Box that Talked” and create our own class crayon boxes!

In first grade, we will watch the Arthur video titled “So Funny I forgot to Laugh!”. You can look this video up on PBS kids or Youtube, if you would like to watch it at home. It is my personal favorite video for explaining to kids how joking around can start to become bullying if you aren’t careful to take cues from the people around you.

Second grade is focusing on the book “Simon’s Hook” which talks about different ways people can hook us in to teasing and how we can react instead.
Next week, Third and Fourth grade will continue their study of Rude, Mean and Bullying. Third grade will work on the difference between Fun and Hurtful teasing. Fourth grade will work on identifying the different types of bullying; physical, verbal, emotional or cyber.

Attached are some documents from PBS that were created to help support parents as they navigate the world of “Rude, Mean or Bullying” with their children. Please look for these documents in the attachments section of the Paw Print.

Sincerely,
Sara Luesse

What’s Happening In Our Café?
No Waste Lunch Day
This Friday, February 8, Edgar Road Elementary will be participating in a no waste lunch day. As the title of the day suggests, students are encouraged to have a lunch that will not have parts that end up in a landfill.

So what does this mean?
Everything that day will need to be recycled, composted, or reused. So a student will need to bring a lunch that contains washable containers, reusable zip lock bags, fruits and veggies that can be composted, containers or bags that can be recycled.

The cafeteria has ordered silverware that will be used for not only February 8, but from now on every day. They will also be serving finger foods that day along with veggie sticks to help us reach our goal of no waste.

Thank you for supporting our efforts to make our world a better place by promoting sustainable practices.

Happy February!
• Try a classic grilled cheese and tomato soup on February 6
• Mandarin Chicken, vegetable brown rice on February 20th
• Hummus and Veggie Flatbread on February 26th
