Running Club
Our after-school Running Club is for grades 2-5 and will be starting on April 9. All the details about Running Club are included in the attached permission slip. Please note: The deadline to register is this Friday, March 29! No registrations can be accepted after that time. We can only have Running Club if enough parents volunteer to help. You do not need to be a runner to help! Please contact Ms. Schrappen with any questions at

Grandparents (VIP) Day
Grandparents (VIP) Day has been moved to May 14th. Grades K, 1, and 2 will celebrate with activities in the morning and grades 3, 4 and 5 will celebrate in the afternoon.

Celebrate Reading Academy
The Celebrate Reading Academy is Webster Groves School District’s new, tuition free summer program, offered to students who will be entering first through seventh grade during the 2019-20 school year, and who would benefit from extra literacy support.

Attached you will find a flyer for the summer school program focused on literacy. In the flyer you will find a link to the website. You can also use this This will take you to the description page and you find the online registration tab on the left side of the page.

Registration for the Celebrate Reading Academy will be open until April 15th.

*Students can participate in both the SEE program and Celebrate Reading Academy with lunch and recess in between at no cost.

Freedom Schools Program
Deaconess Foundation will sponsor a network of CDF Freedom Schools summer programs for children in grades kindergarten (children must have completed kindergarten) through five in the St. Louis region. The seven-week program provides summer enrichment around five essential components: high-quality academic enrichment, parent and family involvement, civic engagement and social action, intergenerational leadership development, and nutritional, physical, and mental health.

The program provides literacy building and personal-empowerment activities, meals, snacks, and field trips at no charge to families. The CDF Freedom Schools model also includes extensive testing and evaluation to measure academic progress.

The program dates are Monday-Friday, June 10-July 26, 8:00 am-5:00 pm. If you are interested in enrolling your child, please see the attachments for more information.

Summer Reading-Celebrate Reading Academy

From the Counselor
March 27, 2019
Students in 3, 4, and 5 will finish up their counseling lessons this week. Third and Fourth grade students will review their test taking skills and study strategies by playing a fun Bingo game. Fifth graders will have their last Team 5 service day on Thursday. They have worked so hard. Way to go, 5th grade!

K, 1, 2, 4 and 5 will have their NCADA lessons coming up in April. These lessons will focus on positive thinking skills, friendship skills and healthy habits. Third grade students are finishing up these lessons this week with NCADA!
MAP updates:

Grades 3, 4 and 5 will start their testing on Tuesday, April 16. All three grade levels will start testing in the morning (fourth after specials). Please be mindful of making appointments during the testing weeks (April 15-19 and April 22 - 26). A detailed schedule of testing times will be out in the Paw Print next week.

PTO Update
Collecting Box Tops
Please turn in the stash your family has been accumulating. The winning classroom earns a "special" prize at the end of the year. Currently Mrs. Lawson is still in the #1 position.

PTO Penny/Change Drive
Are you overloaded with pennies, change, or even some paper money? ERS would love to take them off your hands to help support the specials classes and the PTO. The PTO Penny/Change Drive is Monday April 1st through Friday April 5th . Students are collecting pennies, change, and paper money all week in their classroom piggy banks. The classroom that collects the most money will win a celebration provided by the PTO.

From March 25th-April 5th, we are collecting soda top tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Why? So we can raise money for the Ronald McDonald House to fund families that are waiting for their family member to get better. If you bring tabs in, please put them in the collection bins placed in your classrooms. Please help us help those in need! Thank you!

The gallery hours are from 9:00am.-5:00pm. We will host an Opening Reception for students and families from Clark and Edgar Road on Wednesday, April 10th, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. (The space is not big enough to hold all district families and students on the same night.)

If you can’t make it to the Opening Reception please feel free to drop by any other time during the week to see the show! The students have been working hard to impress you with their amazing talents. We hope you will be able to see their creations on display. A Note from the ER Music Room
Kindergarten and 1st Grade music performances are coming up! K and 1 will be performing on April 11th. Kindergarten at 6pm and first grade at 7pm. There will be a school performance that same day at 2pm. Check out the images attached for details about their themes!

On April 13, the Webster Groves School District's Wellness Committee will be hosting its first Health and Wellness Event. The event will take place at Edgar Road Elementary school from 9am-noon. All district families and community members are encouraged to attend this FREE event, no RSVP or sign up needed. The event will feature breakout sessions and resource tables from community organizations, free raffle/giveaways, physical activities for families and kids to participate in together, and free food! All sessions and tables are centered around various health and wellness topics.

Kids are welcome to attend any breakout session with their parents or can explore the resource tables and play family games with a parent.

Event breakdown:
9:00-9:45 - 2 keynote speakers. One speaker discussing opioid addiction in one room and the other discussing 5 physiological functions that can help your mental health in another room 9:00-noon - 13 resources tables from various organizations in the community to explore. Lots of free giveaways!
9:00-noon - 9 different family activities both indoor and outdoor (weather dependent) featuring Gaga Ball, nature trail fitness stations, cup stacking, balloons, basketball, and more 10:00-noon - 27 different breakout sessions will happen in 30 minutes increments with a 15 minute break in between. Stay tuned for a list of topics and session times in next week's update.

Containers will be set up at the Welcome table for participants to put their raffle ticket in to win lots of different prizes. For each session you attend, you will get more raffle tickets to use. Raffle items will be announced soon!

First Annual Health and Wellness Event Flyer

Proposition E April 2, 2019 for Safety, Accessibility and Space
Proposition E, a no-tax-rate-increase bond issue on the ballot April 2, would improve safety, accessibility and other space issues in district buildings and relieve overcrowding in elementary schools. Six million dollars of the bond issue would be used for safety and accessibility enhancements that include secure doors and controlled, single point of entry vestibules for all buildings, asbestos abatement, secure interior and classroom doors, secure exterior doors, as well as elevators and chair lifts to improve accessibility, in accord with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. The bond issue would include $16 million to add space at Hixson Middle School so that sixth grade can be moved there and to convert the Steger Sixth Grade Center/Givens School campus into a single elementary building.

How did the Board of Education decide to put this proposition on the ballot?
The board’s vote to move forward with the proposition came after about a year of needs assessment/analysis by the district and several months of community discussions including meetings, focus groups and surveys. Superintendent John Simpson said that the decision represents “the best thinking and recommendations” of district administration regarding the path forward for maintaining, improving and right-sizing district facilities to support student learning and achievement.

How did the district determine the safety, space and accessibility priorities covered in the bond issue?
During the past year, the Building Advisory Committee (a citizens committee) has been actively engaged in the evaluation of district facility needs including a comprehensive Facilities Condition Assessment of existing district infrastructure (buildings and improvements). It subsequently evolved into a broader view of district-wide space, security, accessibility, health/safety and programmatic needs. This assessment was completed in April 2018 and included the identification and cataloguing of all major building systems/components and site improvements, the current condition and expected remaining useful life of each, an estimated cost of repair/replacement and a projected date such repairs/replacements would be needed on a year-by-year basis for the next 10 years.
Data collected regarding space and facility needs in the school district include:

o Asbestos (August 2018 by district)
o Safety and Security (July 2018 by Gallagher Bassett)
o Safety and Security (Fall 2018 by Webster Groves Police Department)
o Facilities Condition Assessment (April 2018 by EMG)
o Enrollment Projections (updated January 2018 by Dr. Charles Kofron)
o Additional Enrollment Data (June 2018 by district)
o Programmatic Needs (updated September 2018 by district)

What safety, accessibility and space improvements would Proposition E fund?
Proposition E would provide $6 million for enhancements that include secure doors and controlled, single point of entry vestibules for all buildings, asbestos abatement, secure interior and classroom doors, secure exterior doors, as well as accessibility improvements such as elevators and chairlifts, in accord with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

If the district weren’t asking voters to approve a bond issue, wouldn’t the debt service tax rate roll back?
Passage of Proposition E means the school district would maintain its current debt service levy of 56.99 cents. Absent a bond issue, the district would either need to roll back (reduce) the debt service levy or use what would be rolled back to pay off other existing bonds. The reduction of our debt service levy would need to be gradual if we went that route. We have estimated that beginning in 2021-22, WGSD would need to reduce the levy by about five cents if no new bonds were issued. On a $300,000 residential property, this would translate to about $29 in the pocket of the property owner. Naturally, the home owner would continue to see more property tax savings as time passed and the district continued reducing the levy.

If we chose to use that money to pay down other school district bonds, we would maintain the debt service levy at its current level to do so - 56.99 cents for several more years.
