Welcome to The Paw Print! Here is what’s happening at Edgar Road:

Dear Families of Edgar Road Elementary,

I am excited to announce that there will be a service animal in our school assisting one of our students beginning mid-April. This is a certified service dog who is highly trained. She has undergone more than 240 hours of training specific to the needs of the student, has passed public access tests annually, and meets all the criteria of a service animal as dictated by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). The student’s right to have a certified service dog to assist with his day to day activities and safety is protected by the ADA.

All students will be informed of proper behavior in the presence of a service animal. Staff working with the student will be trained to assist the student with handling the dog should the need arise. At school, the dog is not a pet. She is a working animal and must remain focused on her tasks. We will encourage the students to simply ignore her presence. She will wear a red vest with signs on both sides that clearly state “Service Animal. Do Not Pet.” While the vest is on, all students and faculty should refrain from addressing the dog verbally, touching the dog, or offering any sort of food or toy. The only person to which these rules DO NOT apply is the handler of the animal. Please reinforce these concepts at home to ensure success.

We anticipate the service dog will be a huge benefit to the student’s learning and behavior management. We look forward to this new addition to our school community.

Thank you for your understanding and support. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office or myself. The parents of the student are also happy to discuss any issues with you directly.
