Welcome to The Paw Print! Here is what’s happening at Edgar Road:

From The Secretary
Grandparents/VIP Day is on Tuesday, May 14th.

Each grade level will have a 1 hour time slot where grandparents/VIPs will be welcomed into the classroom for 30 minutes to participate in learning together. The other 30 minutes will be spent going to the book fair, taking a tour of the school or reading together in the library.

Here is our schedule for that day:
9:30 - 10:30 am Kindergarten and 4th grade
11:00 - 12:00 pm 3rd and 5th grade
1:30 - 2:30 pm 1st grade
2:00 - 3:00 pm 2nd grade

If your VIP is visiting more than one child, they have two options. They can either…
Attend during one child’s time slot and include the other siblings in the book fair/library visit OR attend more than one time slot. We are looking forward to seeing everyone and hope to see lots of VIPs here at Edgar Road.

Hats On… For Hearts! On Tuesday, May 14th (for a small donation) wear your favorite hat to school and support one of our 4th grade students in raising money for the Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation. For more information on Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation you can visit their website at https://www.mightyoakes.org/. Some fourth grade students will be walking around tomorrow to explain the fundraiser to all the classes, there will be envelopes in each classroom to collect the donations.

Our Volunteer Breakfast is on Thursday, May 16th at 7:30 AM in the library. This is just a small token of our appreciation for everything our volunteers do for our school!

PE Review

From the Counselor
This week, most classes should be finishing up NWEA testing, leaving next week for make up testing before our testing window closes. I should be getting back to a more normal schedule starting next week, as well. Individual students and groups will have one final check in next week before the last week of school. During the week of May 20-24, I will be seeing students on an as needed basis.

Playdates for Incoming Kindergarten Students:
Starting in June, I will be hosting kindergarten playdates for incoming kindergarten students. These playdates will be from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. on June 13th, June, 27th, July 11th and July 30th. We will be sending out phone blasts and emails to remind families. Come if you can!

Summer Safety:
This is a good time to remind ourselves about Summer Safety! Don’t forget to check helmets and bicycles for repair, as well as make sure sunscreen isn’t expired. Also, older students can always use a reminder about rules for answering the phone and door if parents aren’t home, as well as knowing their addresses and parent phone numbers.

From the District
Edgar Road School Grant Winners
Congratulations to Edgar Road School Teachers Kerry Ann Cocos, Kelly Lee and all other WGSD Elementary Art Teachers.
These teachers are providing innovative and dynamic learning opportunities in their classrooms with the help from grants awarded by the WGSD Foundation. Read below for more details about their awarded grant.

Edgar Road School - Total Awarded $5,117.72
En Plain Air - $1,000 - The purchase of new outdoor looms will give Edgar Road students the opportunity to be inspired by their beautiful outdoor campus as they weave among the landscape. As the art room at Edgar Road does not have windows, this grant gives students the opportunity to bring the inspiration of the natural world into their woven creations through color, subject, materials, and environment, including natural habitats, entomology, plants, and light.

Light Up the Learning - $313.72 - Supplies would be purchased to go with the light table that meet a wider range of curricular goals - specifically science, math, and reading/writing. A new experience would be created for children by adding the light table into centers or stations during specific lessons. For example, putting numbers in order from 1-50 on the light table, matching upper and lower case letters on the light table, finding part of the body on x rays on the light table, building a tower using 3D shapes on the light table, and more! After exploring and learning at the light table with new materials, the children will be able to write about, draw and or share about their learning experience at different stations. Many children will benefit from this different way of learning. Still specific to goals, but more hands on and engaging for the young minds.

The Living Portfolio - $3,804.00 - The “Living Portfolio” is the next phase following the implementation of Teaching for Artistic Behavior. The Living Portfolio Project is a student-curated collection of personal thoughts, moments, big ideas, accomplishments and creations that have come out of their learning experiences in art. This project demonstrates an innovative use of technology, allowing students to create a personal digital portfolio that will authentically represent their journey as artist spanning the most crucial years of development.

You can also sync the calendar to your calendar. It’s a great app! Here’s the video to show you what it offers: https://videopress.com/v/tthlAbCd.
