Spring break is next week! Enjoy the time off, relax and recharge!

Below are some suggestions from our school nurses on how to stay safe and well.

While the CDC currently recommends avoiding non-essential travel, if you do need to travel please continue to wear a mask, practice social distancing, avoid crowds and wash your hands often.  The more steps you take, the more you and others around you are protected against COVID-19.  Please also monitor your symptoms while you are traveling and when you return home and get tested for COVID-19 if you become symptomatic.  You can view cases in the U.S. and cases by state here

Please note that the district will not require quarantines or testing for students or staff following spring break travel. 

 

High School Students Chosen for Missouri Scholars 100

High School students Justin Barker and Erica Magee have been chosen for the 2021 Missouri Scholars 100, a program sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals. Schools across Missouri were invited to nominate candidates for this statewide recognition. The selection is based primarily on a formula using the student's grade point average and ACT or SAT score. Each student nominated had to meet academic criteria: The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.750, a minimum ACT score of 29 or a minimum SAT score of 1,600, be ranked in the upper ten percent of the class and have taken high-level courses in mathematics, science, English and foreign language. The student must also have excellent attendance, be an exemplary school citizen, and be involved in the school activity program.

 

Hixson Student Wins Post-Dispatch Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Colette Giezentanner, an eighth grade student at Hixson Middle School, who won the annual St. Louis Post-Dispatch Spelling Bee at Lindenwood University.

Colette has competed in seven times in regional spelling bees, beginning when she was six. Her winning word was "gressorial," which means "adapted for walking."

 

WGHS Girls Basketball Final Four

The High School girls basketball team has advanced to the Class 6 state semifinals, for the first time in school history. They will face Kickapoo High School on Friday night at 6 p.m. in the Hammons Student Center at Missouri State University in Springfield.

Tickets for the game are on sale through the MSHSAA website. No pass codes are necessary. Tickets cost $9 each plus transaction fees and are only available online.

If you are not able to travel to Springfield to watch in person, the games will be live-streamed through MSHSAA.tv https://www.mshsaa.tv/ There is a $15 pay per view, but the fee will get you access to watch all of the state basketball games that weekend.

Rotary Contributes To Ambrose Family Center Library

The Rotary Club of Webster Groves recently expanded the Ambrose Family Center lending library.  With a $2000 Community Assistance Program Grant, the club donated 165 books that provide greater depth and diversity for young readers.  In recent years the Rotary Club has focused its grants on early literacy, providing books to individual families.  This year, the club wanted to make books available to more families and, at the same time, provide young people with more books that featured fictional and real characters who reflect the community and give them current and historic figures who make great contributions to society but are often not recognized.

The Webster Groves Rotary Club partnered with Adelaide Lancaster of We Stories, who has worked with the Ambrose Family Center for years, to curate a list of books that fill gaps in the library’s collection.  Keeping things local, the club ordered from The Novel Neighbor.  Rotary also supports the district’s Robotics team, provides scholarships to graduating seniors and recently contributed $2000 to the WGSD Foundation to provide aid to families affected by COVID-19.

Four Compete at DECA State Contest

Four High School marketing students are competing this week at DECA’s virtual state level contest. They are Ava Falkenrath, Madeleine Collier, Scarlett Hovermale & Jenna Clark! They took top honors at the district-level competition recently, held virtually this year. Students recorded their presentations for submission.

DECA is a not-for-profit career and technical student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
