Turkey Week activities

11/19/2023 -

The first officially recorded Thanksgiving Day football game between Webster Groves High School and Kirkwood High School was held in 1907. Since then, with only a few exceptions, the two schools have met each year on the football field to compete for the “Turkey Day Championship” and the coveted Frisco Bell trophy. More than just a football game, Turkey Day has become a celebration of spirit and pride for both communities.

In anticipation of the 2023 football game, Webster Groves High School students began celebrating Turkey Day with the Friendship Dance which was held at Webster Groves High School on November 4. Throughout the month, students, alumni and the community will celebrate in a variety of ways leading up to the Turkey Day game, which will be played at Kirkwood this year.

Monday, Nov. 20 – Tacky Day
: Wear red and white, Kirkwood's colors.

Tuesday, Nov. 21 – Spirit Day
: Throughout the school district and community, everyone is encouraged to wear orange and black to show your "Statesmen pride.”  Additionally, high school students and staff decorate their classroom doors with turkey day themes and each class makes a banner to show their spirit.  The Statesmen football team and cheerleaders will have a luncheon at the Hawken House sponsored by the Lions Club and WGHS students will have a pep rally at the end of the day featuring the annual senior line dance to celebrate their Statesmen spirit.

Wednesday, Nov. 22 - Chili Fest
: The WGHS Parent's Club will host the annual Turkey Day Chili Bowl Cook-Off from 5:00 - 7:00 PM in the WGHS cafeteria, PV Commons and courtyard. Community members are invited to sample chili prepared by "amateurs", comprised of parents from the classes of 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027,  along with "professionals," which includes area restaurants The Parkmoor, Highway 61 Roadhouse, Robust, Llywelyn's Pub, O+O Pizza, Wok and Roll and Madrina.  Community members can cast their votes for the best chili after the sampling.
