The letter below was shared with families, staff and community members in the Webster Groves School District:
Dear WGSD community,
I am writing to address recent misinformation that may have reached you in the news. Unfortunately, there have been gross inaccuracies reported by the media suggesting that the district is under financial distress. I want to assure you that this is far from accurate, and I am reaching out to provide a clear understanding of our financial condition.
Contrary to recent media portrayals, our financial situation is stable. Currently, the district’s operating budget has a $1 million operating surplus and is on track to finish the year with a balanced operating budget.
Fiscal responsibility has always been a priority. For the past eight years, the district has ended the fiscal year with a balanced operating budget, maintaining a healthy fund balance. In December 2022, the Webster Groves School District was one of only seven school districts in Missouri to have the “AA+” rating or higher. The rating is based on the district's track record of robust financial performance and strong management practices.
While we are proactively addressing an anticipated revenue loss resulting from the decline in student enrollment during the COVID-19 pandemic, we remain committed to continuing our strong financial practices while providing our students with an exceptional educational experience.
Thank you for your continued support, and as always, please let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely, Dr. John Simpson Superintendent Webster Groves School District
The Webster Groves School District is committed to maintaining an educational and workplace environment that is free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation in admission or access to, or treatment or employment in, its programs, services, activities and facilities.
