Avery Parents for Racial Equity

Webster-Rock Hill Ministries

April 15, 2019

Those present: Elisa Tomich, Amanda Vadar, Nytasha Taylor, Lindsay Brand, Ashley Prulliere, Ed Johnson, Kersten Horn, Jessica Miller, Jennifer Patrick.

Elisa shared some thank you notes with the group that Avery students sent to Black History

Month speakers; these were very much appreciated by the speakers.

Discussed ideas for our group next year:

Possibly distribute teacher survey to gauge teacher reactions to some of our activities/ideas (multi-cultural crayons, etc.)

Ideas for speaker for Avery parents:

  1. Panel discussion or theatrical presentation to highlight some of the tensions between police officers and African American males.
  2. Bring attention to unintentional bias/micro-aggressions and ways to dissipate this.
  3. Collaborate with WEB or other Webster school equity groups on a speaker

Black History Month Speaker Series:

This was a great success and we should try to do something similar next year; each class had at least one speaker and some got to see multiple speakers.

Teacher survey on whether or not the speakers were grade-level appropriate, etc.?

Next year we could recommend that teachers send a note home about this speaker series so parents know a bit more about it and can discuss with their kids.

Diversity Book Fair:

Sold about $1,700 worth of books

The store didn’t have as many books to offer this year since they were in the

process of moving stores; they now have a dedicated staff member to manage school book fairs.

Everyone agreed we should continue this book fair.

Collaboration with WEB speaker series (Dr. Kira Banks, Dr. John Simpson):

Discussed ideas for speaker; let Elisa know if anyone has any ideas.

Could invite a book author; make the interaction more fun?

Please let Elisa and Amanda know if anyone is interested in joining the WEB board and attending meetings.

Other ideas for next year:

More marketing, flyers, advertisement

Get information out to incoming parents (possibly during the Kindergarten welcome day in mid-May)

PTO collaboration:

The group agreed to suggest a joint meeting early next fall with the PTO executivecboard.

  • Discuss expenditures and allocation of money for the Equity Group.

April 25  – meet the new principal

  • We have $297 left to spend this year; we have had a request for $100 to help

supplement the diversity mural; the group agreed.

  • Ideas for remaining money: more flyers/marketing materials; more multi-cultural crayons; donate to WRHM

Prop E update:

Schools will likely be less diverse

What does equity look like once this goes into effect?

Other updates:

GoKids app for ride sharing: Elisa and Dr. Arnold investigated this but were unimpressed after talking with CEO; couldn’t get testimonials; please let the group know if anyone has any other ideas or knows anyone willing to develop an app for this. Ed Johnson recommended we take this to the district level andhave them help solve this.

Equity in Education meeting is Tuesday, April 16 in the high school library.

Book club discussion: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.
