  1. Welcome: Reviewed minutes from late meeting; introduced attendees.
  2. Review/revise mission and vision statement: Unanimous agreement on the following edits in bold:

Our Mission:

We strive to build awareness, solutions, and leadership for racial justice – the systemic fair treatment of people of all races. We will generate transformative ideas, information and experiences/resources to produce equitable opportunities and better futures for all children and families at Avery and beyond.

Our Vision:

We hope to be a school and community where all children are supported in their journey toward personal and academic success; where all families feel welcome in all aspects of school and community; where teachers and staff receive training, encouragement and support to overcome generations of systemic racism in education; and where race no longer is a statistical predictor of educational success or social involvement.

  1. Long range planning: results of last month’s brainstorming session: Tasha reviewed the list of

ideas generated during last month’s meeting and placed them in themed categories. The

following themes were generated:

  1. Anti-racism presentation/courageous conversation presentation:

Elisa has been in touch with Angela Cody and Elizabeth Fuchs about doing a role play for our

Group, Avery parents, Avery teachers and other Webster Equity group members that are interested in joining. Tasha, Jennifer, Paul will help with marketing as needed. What are some take-aways we want the presentation to tackle? Responses from the needs assessment survey. If others have ideas, please email Elisa and Tasha. This meeting will likely be scheduled for the week of Nov. 18 and will take the place of the monthly Avery Parents for Racial Equity meeting. The cost of the event is $70. We could also advertise as a free event but that donations would be welcome.

  1. Finance Update and request from Ubuntu {insert Finance chart}

Ubuntu teachers group has requested help with Pumpkins in the Park – an event that brings

Avery students together the week of Halloween for pumpkin decorating and snacks at Bell Park.

The request is for $125 for pumpkins. A member of the group has offered to provide snacks. The group was unanimous in voting to financially support this event.

  1. Opportunities to connect outside of Avery: Adelaide Lancaster provided an update on what

some other Webster equity-minded groups are doing at a municipal level and how to get

involved. There is a Facebook community that provides information on various municipal-level

meetings and other events. The goal is to stay connected, share information, and organize as

needed. Let Elisa know if you’d like to be added to this group.

  1. Looking Ahead/Book Club, etc.: Elisa will send around a list of books for folks to vote on the next book for book club discussion.
