Avery Parents for Racial Equity

September 13, 2021

Zoom conference

Attendees: Danica Johnson, Hannah Peterson, Gayle Flavin, Amada Vader, Libby Dowdell, Julia Maki, Heidi Bolzenius, Elisa Tomich

Agenda:

We started with a “would you rather” ice breaker - would you rather travel back n time to meet your ancestors or forward to meet you descendants? Some shared what brought them here.

Elisa dove into the mission and vision of Avery Parents for Racial Equity. Every year, the group reviews the language on the web page and makes changes as needed. This will be revisited again in October.

We talked more about how to make our meeting more accessible. For now, we landed on setting meeting dates for the rest of 2021 to help with planning. We'll be doing a Saturday morning event (coffee, bagels and kids)  in early November at Ivory Crockett, and will plan it at our October meeting. We spent the rest of the time talking about school events and the social studies curriculum. Heidi said she'd like to have free events, like movie nights on the blacktop. I said we need to make a concerted effort to get make the planning committees for any of our school events more diverse.

About the social studies curriculum and ABAR discussions in the classroom - Dr. Peterson hasn't had pushback from Avery parents. We discussed what’s happening at the state level and the importance of defending our district’s social studies curriculum. Dr. Peterson shared how allows for history to be taught from different perspectives. I'll be sending out a link to the standards so for anyone wanting to learn more about it.

Elisa shared that Dr. Shane Williamson, director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for WGSG, is planning to hold informational workshops or meetings to help parents understand the ABAR discussions.

What do we want to accomplish this year? Julia Maki urged us to prioritize membership. Gale Flavin said we should take some time to think about outreach and the methods we’re using to communicate with people.

Dr. Peterson suggested that we set meeting dates for the next few months to start getting the word out.
