March 7, 2023 Meeting Minutes

Attendees: Julia Maki, Libby Dowdall, Molly Schroeder, Christine Novalis, Danica Johnson, Amanda Vader, Dr. Hannah Peterson (Avery principal)

During a 30-minute meeting prior to the parent equity group meeting, the group heard from Kathy Ecker, an Avery reading specialist whose position is funded with federal Title I funding. We learned about Avery's reading programs and the progress made in recent years by program participants.

Equity group meeting:

  • Amanda Vader led a discussion about replacing the cake walk during Fall Festival with a new game given its racially charged origins. The group recommended that communications about Fall Festival include direct language informing the community about why the cake walk is being discontinued rather than it being somewhat of a a surprise at the fall event.

  • Julia and Libby have met with a parent who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community to start getting ideas for how the parent equity group can engage and support this community. This parent hopes the equity group will use its communications channels to promote periodic social events for LGBTQ+ families and is willing to take the lead on hosting the first such event before the end of this school year.
  • The group would like to host a family-friendly event this spring. Dr. Peterson suggested doing an event that ties in with the One Book, One School program Avery is launching this spring. The group is interested in doing an outdoor book swap with a few kid-friendly activities, potentially on Saturday, April 29 at the close of this year's reading program. Planning will continue in the coming weeks and at the next meeting.
