ALIGNING FOR IMPACT

Discussion: Revising our mission statement and vision

Drafted update during meeting (additional suggestions welcome):

Mission statement:

Avery Parents for Equity works to build community and consider practical ways to help support educational equity by fostering inclusion, advancing accessibility, and aligning for impact throughout the school district.

Vision statement:

Our vision is for Avery to be a school and community where:

  • Everyone in the Avery community feels welcomed and valued.
  • The individualized needs of each child are supported in their journeys toward personal and academic success.
  • Every part of our school campus is accessible to all students and families.
  • Students, teachers, parents, and leaders in the Webster Groves School District work together to create a flourishing environment that is equitable, inclusive, and accessible to all.

ADVANCING ACCESSIBILITY

Equity group t-shirts update (Julia / Cara)

  • Group reviewed 5 t-shirt designs created by Cara’s wife. We like all of them. Clarified that sign language on one of the designs says ‘Peace, Love, Happiness.’
  • Julia will reach out to Maureen to ask if/how we can track when our design sells, and receive funds (i.e., how to separate from rest of pto funds from spirit wear store). Will also ask if it makes a difference how many designs we have.
  • Once we have that info, Libby will post a poll to the Avery Equity Group Facebook group to pick top option(s).

FOSTERING INCLUSION

EyeSeeMe Book Fair

  • Save the date to volunteer and shop on March 5 and 7 during parent/teacher conferences
  • We will be asking for volunteers to take shifts.
  • Setup is pretty easy, just set up books on shelves and stands.
  • 1-2 volunteers per shift to check out customers and keep shelves stocked.

ALIGNING FOR IMPACT

Updates from PTO liaisons (Gayle, Allison)

  • Last PTO meeting was focused on kindergarten info, so nothing much new
  • Updates from Kindergarten Info Night (Julia)
  • Shared our mission and vision statement (pre-edits). Will be good to have updated version to more clearly share our work in the future.

Update from district-wide equity group (Libby)

  • Continuing to plan districtwide equity event for Feb 12. Event will be focusing on the last 10 years and how equity work has progressed.
  • High school students will share their experiences including tips for us doing equity work as parents.
  • Panel of great speakers
  • Childcare is available. There is an RSVP form for childcare.
  • Our next Avery equity meeting was supposed to be the night after the event, so we’re encouraging everyone to go to district-wide event instead, then we’ll do a social gathering after. Llewellyns, or open to ideas for other locations.
